Sometimes it's the simplest products in our lives that we appreciate the most. But how do you get people to love something so common that it falls away into the background? The OXO stainless steel utensil holder was designed to keep all your kitchen tools handy and add beauty in the heart of your home: your kitchen. As kitchens are getting tighter, it is important to be efficient with space. This is the reason for the elliptical shape that fits in narrow areas while maintaining the capacity for over 16 large-handled tools. The caddy provides everything you need for preparing your favorite meals.
We prototyped a number of different architectures and tested them in peoples' homes. What we discovered was there is a real use for compartments inside the holder to keep crammed tools tidy and organized. We also gained an accurate sense of scale and confirmed the need for the caddy to fit the preferred finish for most aspirational kitchens: stainless steel.
The utensil holder cannot be just functional. It must be counterworthy and fit the aesthetic of other high end stainless steel appliances that it will live with. My inspiration was beautiful, sculptural flower vases.
A big part of the OXO philosophy is the 'ah ha' moment. That little something special that you didn't realize you need, and now that you have it there is no going back. Along with the space-saving design, we incorporated a contoured bottom that keeps tools upright and on display, as well as a removable drip tray that works great for drying tools.
Because the shape is not a pure cylinder, there are many engineering factors to consider. We partnered with the team at OXO to determine sophisticated, efficient methods of construction that makes the product high quality and durable.
The success of the Good Grips utensil holder allowed us to extend the design to Soft Works; an equally refined yet lower cost version of the design.
The white plastic Soft Works caddy maintains the beauty and function of its stainless steel counterpart, but is more compact and slightly smaller in scale.
